Background & Introduction
The Tungog Rainforest Eco-Camp (or TREC for short) is a
community based ecotourism venture planned by the MESCOT
Initiative of the Batu Puteh Community, Lower Kinabatangan,
Sabah. The concept is simple and revolves around 4 key
aspects as follows:
- Provide a platform deep in the Borneon Rainforests of
the Lower Kinabatangan, for visitors to experience the
amazing sounds, smells, wildlife, bird life and biodiversity
of the area.
- Provide an avenue for sustainable livelihood generation
for the local indigenous people and community of the
area.
- Provide an mechanism for sustainable fund-raising to be
channelled into the conservation of the surrounding
resource, in particular wildlife habitat restoration and the
preservation of surrounding wetlands.
- Provide a platform to test and implement technology both
traditional and new-age that reduces our footprint and
impact on the surrounding environment.
Often nature based tourism in Sabah is promulgated under the
veil of "eco-tourism" but in practice gives little regard to the local
population in either social, cultural or economic respects; nor
does it take into account aspects such as the sustainable use of
fuels, energy or water, the use of chemicals, the disposing of
waste products, or the behaviour and management of visitors
and their impacts on sensitive sites. The Tungog Rainforest
Eco-Camp project was initiated to reverse this trend, and create
a bench-mark for the implementation of available technology
and management practices that can reduce visitor's negative
impacts and enhance their positive benefits to natural resource
management and conservation.
This community owned and run "jungle camp" is designed to
cater for a minimal number of visitors who have a keen interest
in conservation and feel happy to try something new, such as
composting toilets, gravity and solar powered water-systems,
zero air conditioning, participate in our program to manage
other aspects of chemical and waste management, alongside
eating local traditional foods from the forest with our local
indigenous hosts, sleeping in simple and exposed camp-style
accommodation, and make a contribution (financial or physical)
towards the conservation of the surrounding forests and
habitats of the Lower Kinabatangan.
This initiative has been kindly supported by Shell Malaysia,
Arcus Foundation, Alexander Abraham Foundation, LEAP
Conservancy, CREST Planning, Raleigh International, Intrepid
Travel, and many other individuals. It is hoped that through this
network of support that the best approaches can be devised
and implemented to help in a small way to "save our planet" and
its incredible heritage and diversity.
Further help is sought, either in knowledge, ideas, technological
innovation, physically through volunteer work in building or
other related work, or even in financial assistance. For further
information about how to help on this initiative please contact:
